All lanes of Interstate 29 in St. Joseph are now open after crews completed the demolition of the Gene Field Road bridge nearly ten hours ahead of schedule. The removal is a critical step in an emergency $5.5 million replacement project triggered after the 63-year-old bridge was struck and severely damaged by an oversized load in November. While the highway has reopened, the Missouri Department of Transportation warns of intermittent overnight lane closures through July 2026 as construction begins on a wider replacement bridge featuring new pedestrian sidewalks.
