St. Joseph city officials are collaborating with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) on plans to reconstruct Interstate 229, but have raised concerns regarding the potential economic impact. The current proposal, estimated at $120 million, would de-designate the interstate and replace the 43-year-old downtown double-decker bridges with a four-lane, mostly at-grade roadway. City leaders are urging MoDOT to maintain direct downtown access, warning that removing the four current entry points and rerouting an estimated 9,000 vehicles daily could strain local infrastructure and hinder economic development.
